01/04...It came as no surprise that Cam Cameron was fired on Thursday by the Dolphins because Bill Parcells has stated in the past that "if they want you to cook the dinner they should at least let you shop for the groceries" and although that quote applied to player personnel decisions, Parcells will surround himself with people that he knows and is confident in from the GM right down to the team's waterboy...Parcells has stated in the past that he doesn't have enough time to train people that he doesn't know and that was the case in Miami with Cam Cameron...the rumors persist that Brown's Coach Romeo Crennel stands at the top of Parcell's wish list as far as coaching candidates are concerned, but I doubt if he would be willing to part with the type of compensation (Draft picks) that the Browns would be seeking if they let Crennel out of his contract to leave for Miami.

The talk around the league these days is that the top Qb's available for the 2008 Draft haven't done enough this season to merit consideration for the First Overall Pick in the Draft...Matt Ryan, Andre Woodson and Brian Brohm are considered to be the top Qb prospects in the upcoming Draft, but the possibility exists that  two of those Qb's could slip to the bottom of the first round because teams aren't willing to invest the type of money a Qb warrants when he's taken with a high pick in the first round of the Draft....the talk around the league is that several NFL teams in need of a Qb may be willing to bypass the three and take a chance on the second tier of Qb's because there isn't a big difference in talent level and their also isn't as much of a financial risk involved in taking a Qb later in the Draft...Chad Henne, Erik Ainge, Colt Brennan and Josh Booty are considered to be the second tier of Qb's at this time.

There is growing speculation that Chargers Coach Norv Turner will be let go if his team loses to the Titans in their opening round matchup this Sunday...former Bears DC and the Chargers current LB Coach Ron Rivera will be a strong candidate to replace Turner along with the teams former OC Cam Cameron.

Indianapolis Colts DC Ron Meeks is reportedly very high on Falcon's Owner Arthur Blank's list of coaching candidates along with the 49'ers Mike Singletary.

The Miami Dolphins will be actively shopping their first overall pick in the Draft according to Bill Parcells comments in his opening press conference in Miami...don't be surprised if Parcells and the Dolphins new Gm Jeff Ireland contact their former employer Jerry Jones and the Cowboys about the possibility of dealing the top pick to the Cowboys...the Cowboys own two first round picks, their own and the pick they acquired from the Browns in the Brady Quinn deal during the first day of last years Draft...if the two were to pull off a deal, the Cowboys would likely target Arkansas HB Darren McFadden with the pick...McFadden is reportedly a favorite of Jerry Jones who is also an Arkansas alum.

Deleware QB Joe Flacco has selected to play in the 2008 Shrine Game and their are various opinions floating out there regarding Flacco's draft stock...so the week of practices more so than the game itself, will give NFL Scouts a good indication of where Flacco stands for the 2008 Draft...Flacco is considered to be in the third tier of QB's available for the Draft...but could move into the second tier with a good showing during the week of practices leading up to the game.

01/10...Illinois HB Rashard Mendenhall is expected to formally announce his intentions to forego his senior year and enter the 2008 Draft at a press conference scheduled for this afternoon....with Mendenhall's entrance, the 2008 Draft will have as many as 8 prospects at the HB position with the potential to be taken off the board during the first day of the Draft....keep in mind that first day now means the first two rounds since the Commissioner announced the changes to the Draft back in October at the NFL owners' meeting.

Rumors are flying out of Dallas this week that Head Coach Wade Phillips could be "one and done" in the Big D if the Cowboys are eliminated by the Giants this weekend...if those rumors are true and the Cowboys bow out of the Playoffs this weekend, it won't be because Phillips didn't do a good job of coaching his team this season...it has more to do with the fact that Cowboy's Owner Jerry Jones wants OC Jason Garrett to become the next Head Coach of his team...when Jones hired Garrett he felt the young assisitant would be best served to learn the ropes and develop as the OC on his team under Wade Phillips with Garrett being ready to succeed Phillips in the near future...however... Garrett has become a hot commodity on the coaching market and it's possible that Garrett will be offerered a head coaching job by somebody when the Cowboys season comes to and end...the Falcons and Ravens have already shown interest in Garrett...but...don't be surprised if the Washington Redskins appear on the radar as a team that is interested in Garrett now that Joe Gibbs has resigned from his coaching position...Owner Daniel Snyder has a history of making a big splash when it comes to his hires and the thought of Snyder prying Garrett away from the Cowboys could be enough for Jerry Jones to turn to Garrett sooner than later as the teams next head coach...stay tuned!

01/11...Jerry Jones denied reports that Wade Phillips could be replaced as coach of the Cowboys after this season.

Cleveland Browns Gm Phil Savage was a guest on the Tim Ryan & Pat Kirwan show on Sirius NFL Radio today and Savage layed out the Browns gameplan for the offseason...Savage stated that he would like to extend QB Derek Anderson's contract before the free agency period begins and reward Anderson for leading the Browns to a 10 win season...Savage also stated that his team has plenty of cap room to accommodate both Anderson and Brady Quinn and considers third string QB Ken Dorsey a valuable part of the team...Savage also said that the Browns top priority in the offseason is to strengthen the teams front seven on the Defensive side of the ball whether it be in free agency or the Draft...Savage also mentioned that the Browns could take an aggressive approach in the Draft since the Browns first pick in the Draft isn't until the second round...reading between the lines...the Browns will strongly consider moving up in the Draft from their second round pick.

01/12...Chad Johnson trade rumors will be one of the hot topics this offseason since the Bengals star receiver has gone public with the fact that he felt neglected by his team this past season and feels a parting of the ways might be in the best interest of both him and the team...Bengals owner Mike Brown stated back in October that his team has no interest in dealing Johnson, but the team had a dissapointing 2007 season, so the Bengals might listen to offers for Johnson after all...rumors are already out there that the Tampa Bay Bucs would be interested in Johnson if the Bengals put him on the block, with the compensation being the Bucs first round pick in the upcoming Draft...expect the Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans Saints and Tennessee Titans to also express their interest in Johnson if the Bengals make him available this offseason.

01/13...West Virginia HB Steve Slaton has decided to forego his senior year and enter the NFL Draft.

Rumors are flying around the league that Tony Dungy coached his last game for the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday and even though Dungy has yet to come to a decision, the Colts are already bracing themselves for Dungy's retirement decision...assistant coach Jim Caldwell is rumored to be the front-runner to replace Dungy in Indy.

A day after the Cowboys were eliminated from the playoffs, rumors are flying that Cowboys OC Jason Garrett is the front-runner along with Marty Shottenheimer to become the next head coach of the Baltimore Ravens...if Garrett lands a head coaching job in Baltimore or elsewhere, look for the Cowboys to turn to Cam Cameron to replace Garrett as the Cowboys new offensive coordinator...Cameron and Phillips both worked together in San Diego on Marty Shottenheimer's staff.

Now that Mike Martz is the new offensive coordinator in San Francisco don't be surprised if the Niners target Rams WR Isaac Bruce in the upcoming free agent signing period...Bruce is very familiar with Martz's system and could serve as a mentor to the Niners other receivers.

01/28...Fassel the front runner for Redskins job?...To follow up on the Mariucci to Washington rumors...the staff that the Redskins have assembled also suggests that Jim Fassel will be given strong consideration for their coaching vacancy and should be considered the front-runner to become the Skins next head coach...it's rather unusual that a teams coordinators are in place before the head coach is even hired...but...Jim Zorn was Fassel's choice for offensive coordinator of the club.

Al's Senior Bowl Review is now up and posted.

The rumor of the day comes out of Washington where former Niners and Lions coach and current NFL Network analyst Steve Mariucci's name is popping up as a candidate for the Redskins coaching search...Mariucci has ties with both of the current Redskins coordinators (Jim Zorn and Greg Blache) and worked with Vinny Cerrato in San Francisco...Mariucci has stated several times that he loves what he's currently doing, because he has a family life and is still being paid by his old contract with the Lions....but that contract ends this year...stay tuned!

01/26...As reported by the NFL Network - Lane Kiffin is coaching the North team with the rest of the Oakland Raiders staff but is the only staff member that isn't wearing the Raiders logo on the sidelines...Kiffin is wearing Under Armour gear which has Raiders colors, but doesn't have the Raiders logo on the gear leading to speculation that Kiffin might be coaching his last game as a member of the Raiders staff ....Kiffin has yet to wear a Raiders logo this week...if Raiders Owner Al Davis decides to release Kiffin, this would be the week to do so, since the Raiders staff will return from Oakland after coaching the North team in the Senior Bowl...The Raiders will interview former Redskins OC Al Saunders this week for a position on their coaching staff...Saunders was one of the finalists in the Raiders coaching search last year before Al Davis hired Lane Kiffin.

The Redskins have dismissed both Gregg Williams and Al Saunders, both of their coordinators from last season.

As I first reported back on 01/23, the Washington Redskins have officially taken DC Gregg Williams out of the running for their coaching vacancy as being reported today by ESPN's Chris Mortenson.

The Raiders organization basically denied the report by ESPN's Chris Mortenson and Raiders senior executive John Herrara called it a non-issue...one things for certain, Lane Kiffin is still the Raiders head coach for now, but there is zero chance that Kiffin will be around for the remainder of his three year contract.

01/23...Gibbs the reason the Redskins won't hire Gregg Williams?...Rumors are flying this morning that the Redskins will pass over current DC Gregg Williams for their coaching vacancy because Joe Gibbs failed to give Williams a ringing endorsement  in his coaching discussions with Owner Daniel Snyder...Williams supposedly went behind Gibbs back several times in his dealings with his players, including the time when Williams didn't let Gibbs know that he intended to put just 10 defensive players on the field for the first play of the game versus the Bills as a tribute to Sean Taylor who passed away earlier that week...Gibbs didn't find out about the incident until the media asked him about it in his post-game interview in which an embarrassed Gibbs responded by saying that he wasn't aware of it and wouldn't comment about it until he spoke to Williams himself.

Lane Kiffin could be One and Done in Oakland...Rumors have been flying for weeks now that the relationship between Raiders Owner Al Davis and head Coach Lane Kiffin is off to a rocky start out by the Bay....Kiffen and Owner Al Davis have not seen eye to eye on personnel decisions and have reportedly bumped heads more than once since the former USC assistant was hired as the Raiders Coach...however, the straw that may have broke the camels back was when Davis decided to keep DC Rob Ryan when Kiffen had other plans for the defensive coordinator position ...there were rumors out there that Kiffin wanted his father Bucs DC Monte Kiffin to join his staff if the Bucs were to let Kiffin walk...even if Lane Kiffin was unable to pry his father out of Tampa, he was opposed to having Rob Ryan return as his defensive coordinator... there were also rumors floating during the season that Lane Kiffen was said to have expressed interest in the Arkansas coaching job before Bobby Petrino was hired and Kiffen's name was also mentioned when the Michigan opening became available...is was perceived to be just rumors, but there might be more substance to those rumors that originally thought...the timing of all the uncertainty in Oakland isn't good news because the Raiders staff is set to Coach the North team in the Senior Bowl.

DT James Reed and TE Jason Dunn today to relieve their salary cap.

Justin Smiley...Four teams are reportedly interested in Smiley with Miami preparing to make a strong push.

Al's Draft Scoop...Flacco to Miami?...Talk is cheap these days especially regarding the NFL Draft where smokescreens are a plenty, especially when scouts and NFL personnel talk about their own teams intentions in the Draft, but I have reason to believe that the Dolphins will pass up Matt Ryan with the first overall pick.  A very good friend of mine in the scouting industry told me this morning that the talk around the scouting community is if the Dolphins aren't able to trade their first round pick, they will take either Chris Long or Vernon Gholston to play the rush end (or OLB) in their 3-4 scheme or use the pick on OT Jake Long of Michigan.  My source also told me that he expects the Dolphins to take a quarterback with their pick in the second round, with that quarterback being none other than Deleware's Joe Flacco. The talk around the scouting community is that Dolphins vice president of football operations Bill Parcells is said to be enamored with Flacco, a New Jersey native just like Parcells.

Myron Cope Passes...Legendary Steelers announcer Myron Cope has passed away at the age of 79.

Derek Anderson...The Browns have offered Derek Anderson a 3 yr $20 mill dollar contract with $10 mill guaranteed.

J.P. Losman...The Bills will be taking offers for QB J.P. Losman when the trading season opens on Friday.

Al's Free-Agency Scoop...The Philadelphia Eagles are targeting CB Asante Samuel and S Gibril Wilson in the upcoming free agency period, with the hopes of landing one of them when the market opens on Friday.

Al's Draft Scoop...Cornerback Dominique Rogers-Cromartie's draft stock is shooting up the boards with another good showing at an NFL event.  Cromartie first made a good impression on the scouts during the week of the Senior Bowl practices in Mobile, where he showed the scouts he was much more than a small school sleeper prospect from Tennessee State.  On Tuesday, Cromartie blew the scouts and NFL personnel away with his performance in everything he did at the Combine.  Cromartie turned in the best time (6.74) in the 3 cone, the best time (11.06) in the 60 yd long shuttle, had the best (38.5) vertical jump, the best (10'11") broad jump measurement and ran the third best forty time being clocked at 4.33.  To top it off Cromartie displayed outstanding footwork and was very fluid and impressive in the on field drills for the defensive backs.  Cromartie wasn't considered to be one of the top four cornerbacks for the upcoming draft when the college season ended, but more of a second to third round prospect with a chance to crack the first round with a good showing at the workouts.  But that was then, and as of now, Cromartie is running neck and neck with Leodis McKelvin of Troy for the right to be the first corner to come off the board in April.  The other top cornerback prospects were either shorter or slower than originally expected, or in Aquib Talib's case, a little too tight in the hips in the defensive back drills, which will hurt his stock when the NFL teams stack their boards in early April.  All in all, Dominique Cromartie has great blood-lines (the cousin of Antonio Cromartie), untapped potential and is considered to have a very high ceiling, which is exactly what NFL teams look for in the first round of the Draft.  Since Cromartie has much better ball skills than Leodis McKelvin of Troy, It leads me to believe that Cromartie has a legitimate chance to be the first corner to come off the board in the upcoming Draft.  One thing is for certain, Cromartie made himself a ton of money on Tuesday.

Salisbury Axed at ESPN...ESPN hired former Vikings WR Cris Carter and released Sean Salisbury on Tuesday.

Quick Hits...Randy Moss is reportedly close to signing a multi-year deal with the Patriots...The Lions are reportedly the front runners to land LB Jonathan Vilma (a perfect fit for the Lions scheme)...the Niners re-signed NT Isaac Sopoaga to a 5 year deal.

02/26...FA News & Cuts...Arizona Cardinals DE/OLB Calvin Pace has stated that he will sign with either the New York Jets, Miami Dolphins or San Francisco 49'ers in the upcoming free-agency period...the Redskins released WR Brandon Lloyd...Kansas City released WR Eddie Kennison...New England released LB Oscar Lua...and the Jets gave CB Andre Dison and OG Adrian Clarke their walking papers.

Patriots/Colvin...The Patriots are expected to release OLB Rosevelt Colvin in a salary cap move.

Foster to Niners...The San Francisco 49'ers are reportedly on the verge of signing HB DeShaun Foster.

Al's Draft Scoop...Even though Darren McFadden has been the talk of the town since Sunday when he ran a 4.33 forty, his draft stock still remains a question mark because of his character concerns.  The only team that might take a chance on him in the top five is the Raiders because of Al Davis's love for speed.  Don't think for a minute that the Falcons would even consider him with their pick, especially after all that owner Arthur Blank has been through with the Michael Vick fiasco.  The possibility still exists that McFadden could still fall out of the top 10 altogether, unless the Jets or Bengals take a chance on him with the Bengals being the least likely due to their insistence of cleaning up their act on draft day and passing on the character concern prospects.
