Breaking NFL News and Al Fronczak's Inside Scoop on the Draft
04/25
Post Draft - Each and every year I refrain from picking the winners and losers in the Draft because nobody truly knows how a teams draft will turnout until several years down the line, but I can't help but comment on one football team that really helped themselves and another that may have set themselves back with their moves. The New England Patriots are the best team in the NFL in terms of being able to work the board. Not only did the Patriots fill needs and come away with five potential starters in the draft, but they also committed highway robbery by fleecing the Carolina Panthers out of their second round pick in the 2011 Draft by trading the Panthers their third-round pick in the 2010 Draft. The Panthers 2011 pick will likely turn out to be a Top 5 pick in that round. On the flip side, the New York Jets came away with two potential starters in CB Kyle Wilson and OG Vladimir Ducasse, but at the end of the day, Jets fans are likely scratching their heads and wondering if they're a better team post-draft after dealing away HB Leon Washington and releasing OG Alan Faneca. The Jets also passed on several edge-rushers in the draft that could have improved their pass rush, and are hoping that the ancient Jason Taylor has one good year left in his body. In my opinion, for a team that was on the brink of playing in the AFC Championship Game, the Jets moves and draft strategy may have set them back a bit.

Browns Not Targeting Clausen...Mike Lombardi of the NFL Network reports that he was told by a source that the Cleveland Browns are not targeting Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen in the second round.
Bengals Sign Nugent...The Cincinnati Bengals signed kicker Mike Nugent to a two-year contract.
Bills, Browns Interested in Rams Pick...Adam Schefter of ESPN reports the Buffalo Bills and the Cleveland Browns have contacted the St. Louis Rams about acquiring the No. 33 overall pick.
Under The Radar...Don't be surprised if Mississippi QB Jevan Snead comes off the board sometime tonight in the third round of the draft. Snead had a dissapointing junior season, but played in a tough SEC conference with little help other than Dexter McCluster this past season. Snead will benifit greatly from working with an NFL quarterbacks coach, and could be one of those players that NFL teams are quietly discussing as a second day draft pick. -Al Fronczak
Slipping into the Third...After completing my second round mock this morning, I have the following well known prospects slipping into the third round of the draft: WR Damien Williams, WR Dexter McCluster, WR Brandon Lafell, WR Eric Decker, TE Rob Gronkowski, DE Corey Wooten, DT Terrance Cody, ILB Sean Lee, FS Major Wright, SS Chad Jones, SS Darrell Stuckey. -Al Fronczak
Bears Draft...Mike Mulligan of the Chicago Sun Times reports the Chicago Bears are targeting Florida safety Major Wright at pick No. 75 and hope to choose between Kansas' Darrell Stuckey or Virginia Tech's Kam Chancellor if Wright is already off the board. Sun Times

Interest in Ravens Pick...Pro Football Weekly is reporting at least one unnamed team is trying to make a move to acquire a pick in the second round of the draft...Baltimore Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome said he has received an offer for the No. 43 pick, the 11th selection in Round Two. Pro Football Weekly
First Round Reach?...The Jacksonville Jaguars selection of DT Tyson Alualu was viewed as the reach of the first round of the draft, but if he put on the tape, you will see he's an explosive up the field rusher that will be used as a three-technique DT in the Jaguars scheme. I still believe the Jaguars could have picked up an additional pick by moving down in the round, but there was no guarantee that Alualu would still be on the board if they moved down. Alualu posted a better forty-time, short shuttle time, three-cone time, broad jump and vertical numbers than all of the other top defensive tackles in the draft including Ndamukong Suh and Gerald McCoy. -Al Fronczak
Panthers Want McCoy...Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network reports the Carolina Panthers are interested in moving up in the second round of the draft to take Texas QB Colt McCoy.

Signings...The Atlanta Falcons re-signed HB Jerious Norwood and punter Michael Koenen to one-year contracts...The Philadelphia Eagles re-signed punter Sav Rocca to a one-year contract.
Redskins/Jamaal Brown...Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network reports the Washington Redskins could make a move for New Orleans Saints restricted free agent tackle Jamaal Brown by dealing DT Albert Haynesworth for a second or a third-round pick in the draft...the move would allow them to get in the ballpark for Brown. NFL.com
Eagles-Dolphins Deal?...Sal Paolantonio of ESPN reports the Philadelphia Eagles are in trade discussions with the Miami Dolphins about trading up to No. 12 overall pick in the draft.
Eric Berry/Redskins...Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network reports other NFL teams in the top 10 of the draft are starting to project Tennessee safety Eric Berry to the Washington Redskins in their internal mock drafts. LaCanfora/Twitter

Dolphins Didn't Want Taylor...Adam Schefter of ESPN reports the Miami Dolphins didn't make Jason Taylor an offer to bring him back after the 2009 season.
Final Mock...In my final mock for the 2010 Draft, I didn't include any potential trades for the teams, instead I projected the players going to the teams that I believe will take them in the Draft. For example I have Iowa OT Bryan Bulaga going to the Chiefs at No. 5, not because I think that Bulaga is the fifth-best prospect in the draft, but because I think there's a good chance the Chiefs will move down a bit and land Bulaga with a later pick. Another example is the Seahawks taking Oklahoma OT Trent Williams with pick No. 14, Williams will never last that long, but I believe the Seahawks and Redskins could pull off a deal in which the Seahawks land Williams since he's their number one tackle on their board. I also have California HB Jahvid Best sneaking into the latter part of the first round, because he's a potential difference maker that just makes plays every time you turn on the tape. Forget the concussion issue, I've been told that he's been medically cleared and the rumors that he was still concerned about the concussions that he suffered last season, were erroneous and planted by some team that hopes he would fall to them. My only regret is not including Georgia Tech WR Demaryious Thomas in my final mock, but I couldn't find a home for him. -Al Fronczak
Redskins Surprise?...Adam Schefter of ESPN, reports the Washington Redskins will pull the first surprise of the NFL Draft...there are other reports surfacing that the Redskins and Rams are in negotiations regarding the first pick in the draft.

Potential Broncos-Chiefs Trade...Keep an eye on a potential draft-day trade involving the Denver Broncos and the Kansas City Chiefs. The Broncos have been dumping salaries (Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall and Tony Schefler) and collecting draft picks recently in an attempt to re-shape their team under head coach Josh McDaniels. Rumors have been floating recently that the Broncos are interested in moving up in the draft for a quarterback since Kyle Orton is in the last year of his contract and Brady Quinn was only brought in as a reclamation project. The Chiefs who own pick No. 5 in the draft have made it known that they are listening to offers and their pick could be a potential hot spot for Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen to come off the board. According to the draft trade chart, the compensation for the Broncos to move up to pick No. 5 would be pick No. 45, their second of two second-round picks in the 2010 Draft.
The Broncos would get their quarterback of the future, while the the Chiefs would be happy to move down, acquire another second round pick, and could still land an offensive tackle in Bryan Bulaga at pick No. 12. -Al Fronczak

The Redskins will also be shopping quarterback Jason Campbell, and defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, despite the fact that Mike Shanahan stated that he wasn't interested in trading Haynesworth. Ted Ginn...Don't be surprised if Dolphins' WR Ted Ginn lands in Baltimore with the Ravens now that he's on the block. Ginn is the deep threat that the Ravens offense lacks, and would be re-united with OC Cam Cameron, who made Ginn the 9th-overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, when he has the head coach for the Dolphins. -Al Fronczak

Dolphins Sign Marshall...11:25 am est...Adam Schefter of ESPN reports the Miami Dolphins and Brandon Marshall have agreed to terms on a 4-year, $47.5 million contract, with $24 million guaranteed. Schefter/Twitter
Brandon Marshall...I wrote yesterday that an "under the radar" team that had a higher second-round pick than Seattle, could trump the Seahawks and acquire Brandon Marshall. The "under the radar" team turned out to be the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins sweetened the deal by including an undisclosed pick in the 2011 draft, which could turn out to be a second-rounder. -Al Fronczak

Cleveland Browns/Brandon Marshall...Don't be surprised if an "under the radar" team like the Cleveland Browns makes a play for Broncos' WR Brandon Marshall. The Browns have a huge need at the receiver position, and a receiver like Marshall, would be a great fit in the Browns west coast offense. Mike Holmgren loves big receivers that fit into his offensive scheme, and has a history of giving troubled receivers a break, since Holmgren gave WR Koren Robinson a second chance with Seahawks back in 2008, just seven years after making Robinson a first-round pick for the Seahawks in the 2001 draft. The Browns could acquire Marshall at a bargain basement price (the Browns second-round pick No. 38) since the Steelers only received a fifth-round pick as compensation from the Jets for wide receiver Santonio Holmes. The Browns pick would trump the Seattle Seahawks pick (No. 58 overall) in the second round, because the pick is 20 slots higher in the draft, which would be more attractive to the Broncos as trade compensation for Marshall. -Al Fronczak

Draft Buzz...The reason rumors are flying that Oklahoma OT Trent Williams could be the first offensive lineman off the board, are because Williams early season struggles were reportedly due to him being less than 100% because of an ankle injury, which made scouts evaluate his work on tape much closer after his ankle was back to 100%. Williams play improved as the season progressed and his workout numbers at the combine, were much better than all of the rest of the top offensive linemen, except for Bruce Campbell. -Al Fronczak

Fourth Round Value?...Two highly-rated linebacker prospects could still be available when day three of the NFL draft begins to kick off the fourth-round on Saturday April 24. I expect Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes to slip into the fourth round and still be on the board due to his lack of ideal speed. I can't remember the last time an NFL team selected a linebacker that ran a 5.0 forty-time in the first three rounds of the draft. I also expect Penn State linebacker Navorro Bowman to still be available in the fourth-round, due to the depth at the position, his lack of ideal speed, and character concerns. I'm in the process of finalizing my top 100 prospects list, and will have it posted on or before Tuesday, April 20. -Al Fronczak

Draft Day Shocker Part 2...Last year I posted that an offensive tackle out of Houston by the name of Sebastian Volmer was flying under the radar, and would be picked much higher than what most draftniks expected. The New England Patriots selected Volmer in the second round of the 2009 Draft with the 58th overall pick, and Volmer turned out to be a pleasant surprise. For the 2010 Draft, one of the prospects that is flying under the radar is Citadel WR Andre Roberts. Roberts is a play-maker who has some of the best hands in the draft, to go along with his ability to seperate from a defender and get in and out of his breaks quickly. At the combine, Roberts posted better times in the forty yard dash, short-shuttle and three-cone drill, than all of the top-rated receiver prospects in the draft. Roberts also appeals to NFL teams because of his return ability and because he's clean off the field. Roberts will come off the board on Friday night, much earlier than what the Gallery Gods expect. -Al Fronczak

Draft Buzz...The latest buzz circulating, with a little more than two weeks before the draft, has Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen's draft stock slipping, which is mind boggling to most draftniks, since Clausen has yet to play in a game, throw a pass, or even workout for NFL teams since the end of the college football season. This is the time of the year that NFL teams put each and every prospect under a microscope to make sure they have covered all the bases, and even though Clausen has yet to workout for NFL teams, because of his toe injury, his stock may have taken a bit of a hit at the combine, when it was discovered that Clausen has smaller hands (9" length) and shorter arms (30 3/4" length) than NFL teams look for in a quarterback prospect. His arm length isn't that much of an issue, because Clausen didn't have a problem with batted down passes at Notre Dame, since he throws the ball like a javelin with a high release point, but his smaller than ideal hand-size, is a bit of an issue because of ball security concerns, especially from teams that play in inclement weather. In my opinion, Clausen doesn't have big enough hands to spin the ball naturally, like some of the other top prospects, which is why it looks like he uses all arm when throwing the football. Everything I mentioned, is just another example of what NFL teams find out about a prospect, when they put him under a microscope and sometimes over-scout him during the pre-draft process, which is why I've always believed in trusting a players production on tape and let his play on the field take care of itself. With all that stated, I still have a hard time believing Clausen gets past the Bills pick at No. 9, although I have them passing him up in my latest mock, because of their interest in Jason Campbell, but the Bills need to generate ticket sales, and a new face for the franchise at a position of need, would be a start. -Al Fronczak

Patriots-Raiders Deal?...The report out of Boston that the Patriots reportedly "love" Jared Odrick, coupled with the report on Tuesday, that an unnamed NFL team offered the Raiders a 2010 second-round pick and a 2011 first round pick, makes me believe the Patriots are the "unnamed team" that wants to move up to the Raiders pick at No. 8. It makes sense, because I've been hearing that Odrick is "flying" up the boards, and since the Patriots own three second-round picks in the 2010 draft, and have two first-round picks in 2011 (their own and the Raiders pick acquired in the Richard Seymour trade) they have the ammunition to make such a deal. But with that stated, keep in mind that it's that time of the year where false reports are "planted" by NFL teams. -Al Fronczak
