Taylor On Bills Radar Screen - After passing up a quarterback in the first three rounds, don't be surprised if the Buffalo Bills select Virginia Tech QB Tyrod Taylor on the third day of the draft. Second Round - Don't be surprised if the Raiders make a serious play to move up in the round to land one of the two quarterbacks (Ryan Mallett or Colin Kaepernick) that fit their vertical passing game. The Raiders may need to move into the Patriots pick at No. 33 to get ahead of the Bills picking at No. 34 to land their choice of QB, since the Bills could be in play for a quarterback in the second round as well. The Raiders and Patriots have a solid front office relationship and a history of completing deals between the two teams. -Al Fronczak
Draft Strategy - I wasn't surprised that the Atlanta Falcons traded up for WR Julio Jones, but after seeing that they gave up a boatload of picks including a 2012 first rounder, all I can say is I hope Jones can not only be a great receiver, but he also needs to learn how to rush the passer and play CB, because the Falcons defense looked terrible at times last year and were exposed by the Packers in the playoffs. With glaring needs at DE and OLB I'm just wondering if the Patriots expected the last two highly-rated five-technique DE's to come off the board in consecutive picks at end the first round of the draft. Just a hunch that Bill Belichick wouldn't have dealt pick No. 28 to the Saints had he known that the both Cameron Heyward and Muhammed Wilkerson wouldn't be on the board when the Patriots open the second round of the draft today. You can keep moving back in the draft and stock-piling picks, but sooner or later you have to think about winning sooner than later. -Al Fronczak

Coming Tuesday: Tight Ends & Centers
Smokescreen - The rumors continue to circulate that TCU QB Andy Dalton will come off the board in the later part of the first round of the draft, which is laughable, much like the case last year, when rumors that Colt McCoy was climbing the boards and would be taken in the first round of the draft. Dalton has impressed in his pre-draft interviews and has enhanced his stock, but he won't hear his name come off the board on the first day of the draft. Colt McCoy, by the way, wound up being a third-round selection of the Cleveland Browns. -Al Fronczak

Mallett's Picking Up Steam - Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett's stock was dinged at the outset of the pre-draft process due to overblown rumors of character concerns, and the fact that he ran a super-slow 5.37 forty-time at the combine, but Mallett didn't train for the forty at the combine, and has run in the 4.9 range before. He's the most NFL ready quarterback available in the draft, has elite arm strength, production in a tough SEC conference, along with knowledge of a pro-style offense which will help him come off the board within the first 20 picks in the draft. The Tennessee Titans, Minnesota Vikings, and the Miami Dolphins are among teams with early picks in the first round that are considering pulling the trigger on him early in the draft. -Al Fronczak

If Newton is off the board when it's time for the Bills to pick, the Bills might pass up Gabbert for Texas A&M OLB Von Miller or North Carolina DE/OLB Robert Quinn. Quinn could be a dark-horse pick for the Bills, especially if both Newton and Miller are off the board, since Bills' GM Buddy Nix was present at Quinn's pro day workout last week. Also, the Bills want to land a franchise-type quarterback as their new "face of the franchise" to put fans back into the seats, and if they pass on a quarterback in the first round of the draft, don't be surprised if they make a play for Broncos' QB Tim Tebow, like I pointed out, back on 01/03 in January's Draft News. Broncos' executive John Elway has gone out of his way to say that he doesn't believe Tebow is a franchise quarterback at this time, and my guess is he'd be more than happy to part ways with Tebow, if he can find a willing trade partner. The Bills were very high on Tebow coming out of the draft last year, which leads me to believe that he could still be in their plans, but only if they aren't able to land the quarterback that they are seeking in the draft. -Al Fronczak

Draft Tips - In my latest mock draft, I have the Washington Redskins selecting QB Jake Locker, but I note that the team is looking to trade down in the first round, because they have numerous needs and are without picks in both the third and fourth round of the draft. If the Redskins aren't able to move down in the first round, they will still consider Jake Locker with their pick at No. 10, and pull the first surprise of the 2011 draft...The reason Alabama HB Mark Ingram's stock seems to be slipping a bit is mainly due to the fact that he's not a big back, and his numbers from the combine confirm that he lacks top-end speed and explosiveness...add to that the fact that some teams may be concerned with his knee condition, and the draft is deep at the HB position. -Al Fronczak
Flying Under The Radar - Boise State WR Austin Pettis is rarely mentioned among the top receivers available for the upcoming draft, but NFL teams have taken notice of him. He has good size at 6-2.5, 205, has some of the best hands in the draft, and the best short-area quickness of any receiver in the draft. His amazing 3.88 short-shuttle time was the best at the combine, and was much better than any WR including the top two receivers (A.J. Green's 4.25, and Julio Jones 4.21) in the draft. That elite shuttle time confirms his short area quickness, which allows him to get in and out of his breaks quickly, make people miss, and get open. At one point during the season, 49 out of his first 51 receptions went for first downs, which shows he knows how to get open in crucial situations, and has the confidence of his quarterback. Pettis is being overlooked a bit because of the 4.61 forty time that he ran at the combine, but he plays faster than his time, and his 39 touchdowns at Boise, confirm his production. -Al Fronczak
