2004 NFL Mock  Draft
Round Two
HOT NFL Draft News and Rumors

(Updated Monday Afternoon April 26th)

04/26...The Giants will release QB Kerry Collins today in a move that clears the way for Eli Manning to become the Giants starting Quarterback...look for the San Francisco 49'ers to become the front runners for Collins IF they are able to find Cap space to fit him in.

O4/26...QB Ben Roethlisberger almost became a Buffalo Bill on Saturday...the Bills tried to move up in the Draft and ahead of the Steelers but were unable to find a trading partner...Jacksonville sitting at pick #9 should have taken the compensation that the Bills were offering to move up and could have moved down to pick thirteen and still got their man WR Reggie Williams.

04/23...The Steelers and Lions are said to be close to completing a deal that would have the teams swithching picks in the first round...the Steelers would also send Receiver Plaxico Burress to Detroit to complete the trade...Burress is a Michigan State product and would welcome the move out of Steeltown...it now appears that this trade fell through.

04/23...The Giants and Chargers are very close to finalizing a deal that would put the G-Men on the clock with the first pick in the Draft

04/22...The Raiders and Browns have been talking about a deal that would see the Raiders trade out of the second spot in the Draft and allow the Browns to take Robert Gallery... the Raiders would then take WR Roy Williams at #7...HOWEVER...the Jacksonville Jaguars have been talking to the Detroit Lions about the possibility of moving up to the sixth pick in the Draft ...the Jaguars target?...WR Roy Williams...stay tuned!

04/22...Archie Manning has told the San Diego Chargers not to pick his son in Saturday's NFL Draft...the Giants are the front-runners to acquire the pick.

04/22...The Cleveland Brown have contacted the San Diego Chargers about the possibility of moving up to the top spot in Saturdays NFL Draft. Their target - Robert Gallery.

04/21...It's looking more and more like QB J.P. Losman won't last until the second round of the Draft...both the Green Bay Packers at #25 and the St.Louis Rams at #26 are the front runners to take Losman with their pick in the First round.

04/21...I'ts been mentioned before in this column that the Jets may be interested in trading down if they can recover a second round pick that they sent to the Titans for Justin McCariens....but...if the Jets stay at twelve look for them to take one of the two Miami of Florida products with their pick...DT Vince Wilfork and LB D.J. Williams are said to be at the top of the Jets "Most Wanted" list.

04/19...The latest word circulating around the league is the Jacksonville Jaguars may make a serious attempt to move up to the second spot in the Draft which is currently held by the Oakland Raiders...their target - Wr Larry Fitzgerald...The Arizona Cardinals covet Larry Fitzgerald but IF he's off the board when it's time for the Cardinals to pick look for them to deal the pick to the Cleveland Browns who covet OT Robert Gallery...if Gallery is still on the board at #3...as we stated two weeks ago this deal could take place under that scenario and is helped by the fact that Cardinals Coach Denny Green's son Jeremy Green works in the Cleveland Browns Front Office.

04/19...It's common knowledge that the Cleveland Browns covet Robert Gallery but they also have their eyes on two Miami of Florida products - Safety Sean Taylor and Tight End Kellen Winslow....if the Browns decide not to move up for Gallery they may make a move for either Taylor or Winslow with the Redskins being a possible trading partner at pick #5...it's said the Redskins like both Taylor and Winslow but they also like DE Kenechi Udeze as well...Skins Coach Joe Gibbs stated recently that he feels the player the Skins take in the first round needs to be a "difference maker" ( someone who either scores touchdowns or sacks the Quarterback)...Washington would love to be able to move down in the Draft in the top 10...pick up an extra pick and still be able to land one of those three Prospects...the Redskins have only one first day pick and a total of three picks in the entire Draft.

04/19...The New York Jets sitting at pick twelve are being targeted by several teams as a team to deal with to move up in the Draft...the Jets would love to be able to move down in this Draft and add a second round pick since their own second rounder was sent to the Titans for WR Justin McCariens...the Denver Broncos, New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles are said to be the teams that are most interested in the Jets pick.

04/16...Although it's been prettty quiet on the trade front regarding Patrick Ramsey, don't be surprised if the Redskins attempt to strike a deal on Draft day to move the disgruntled QB for a draft pick or two...Look for Buffalo to be at the top of the list of teams that may be interested in acquiring the former Tulane product, if the Skins decide to move him.

04/16...I have a feeling that Wr Rashaun Woods, OLB Karlos Dansby and CB Will Poole will make several NFL teams regret that they passed on them in the upcoming NFL Draft.

04/16...For the 2003 Draft DT Jimmy Kennedy of Penn State was at the very Top of my Overrated list...this year Cornerback Derrick Strait receives that dubious honor!

04/14...I think the San Diego Chargers will make a serious attempt to move down in the Draft and may move more than once....it wouldn't surprise me if the Chargers take Qb Phillip Rivers after moving down since Head Coach Marty Shottenheimer Coached Rivers in the Senior Bowl.  Remember "Shottzy" Coached another sidearmed slinger by the name of Bernie Kosar when he was the Head Coach of the Browns.

Al Fronczak's 2004 Draft Review.

Although we really wont know who the real winners and losers of this Draft really are until a few years down the line, these are my thoughts on what took place this weekend.  Teams that I thought really helped themselves in the Draft were the Patriots not that they needed the help but they had the cards fall their way in round one when the Draft's BEST NT Prospect Vince Wilfork fell to them at pick #21...the Patriots were then able to take one of the Top 3 Tight Ends Ben Watson of Georgia at the end of the round...their next two picks DE Marquise Hill of LSU and Safety Guss Scott of Florida were also solid value choices...on the second day of the Draft the Pats were able to land RB Cedric Cobbs of Arkansas in round four and  WR P.K. Sam of Florida State in round five...Sam may turn out to be one of the true steals of this Draft...I really like the aggressiveness that the Bills showed on Saturday when they were determined to come out of Day one with one of thie Draft's top four Quarterbacks and accomplished that when they swung a deal with the Cowboys to land QB J.P. Losman of Tulane...the Bills needed to impriove their speed at the wide receiver position and tabbed one of the Draft's fastest WR's in Lee Evans at pick thirteen...the Bills also get high marks for adding DT depth with Tim Anderson of Ohio State in round three and TE Tim Euhus of Oregon State in the fourth round...the Steelers came into the Draft with three needs QB, CB and ORT...the Steelers were able to fill all three with their first three picks QB Ben Roethlisberger, Cb Ricardo Colclough and OT Max Starks...good job!...I like what the Vikings did and were also very lucky that DE Kenechi Udeze fell to them in round one to fill their biggest need...the Vikings also needed to get better at the Linebacker position and they did by tabbing Dontarrious Thomas in the second round and then went back to the D-Line and added DE/DT Darrion Scott of Ohio State in round three and got great value with their second day picks fourth rounders  OT Nat Dorsey of Georgia Tech and HB Mewelde Moore of Tuland...I felt San Francisco did a great job of finding a couple of trading partners to move down in the Draft to take WR Rashaun Woods of Oklahoma State...the Niners used some of the extra picks to fill some needs and came away with 6 solid prospects after the first round in G Justin Smiley, CB Shawntae Spencer, WR Derrick Hamilton, DT Isaac Sopoaga, LB Richard Seigler and Qb Cody Pickett...and also like what the Titans did in the Draft by moving out of the first round and landing 6 solid prospects from the second round on - TE Ben Troupe fills a need...the Titans needed a DE and came away with two in the second round Travis LaBoy of Hawaii and Antwan Odom of Alabama and one in the fourth in Bo Schobel of TVU...their third round pick of DT Randy Starks could turn out to be a steal at that point and a great value pick...Great Draft strategy was executed by the Carolina Panthers in round one when they were able to move ahead of Indianapolis and Kansas City by trading with the Niners to take CB Chris Gamble of Ohio State...on the flip side I didn't like the Jaguars strategy early on...Jacksonville  could have really enhanced their Draft by trading down with Buffalo at pick thirteen and still take WR Reggie Williams...the Jaguars could have added an extra second round pick or more and still got their man....Buffalo was willing to give up a high 2004 choice or 2005 choice to move up and ahead of Pittsburgh in the Draft to take QB Ben Roethlisberger...for whatever reason the Jaguars turned their back on the deal and made WR ReggieWilliams the Draft's first real reach...fans of the Kansas City Chiefs must still be in shock after their Chiefs failed to come away with any Cornerbacks in this Draft...CB was the Chiefs Biggest need...the Chiefs Draft strategy was poor at best as they seemed to take the best available player on their board instead of filling needs on the Defensive side of the ball...they moved back and out of the first round and reached for their first pick - second rounder DT Junior Siavii of Oregon...they then passed on several good CB's with their other second round pick to take TE Kris Wilson of Pitt...the last time I checked the Chiefs still had TE Tony Gonzalez on their roster...wow!...the Chiefs just don't get it!...Defense wins Championships and I figured they learned that lesson in their playoff loss to the Colts in a game that saw their Defense get humiliated at home...I also don't like what the Colts did in the Draft...they traded down and out of the first round after the Panthers moved ahead of them to take CB Chris Gamble...but what they did, or should I say failed to do after that won't help them close the gap on the Patriots this season...the Colts needed help at CB, LB'er and D-Line but passed on several good prospects to take third round pick TE Ben Hartsock of Ohio State when they have Marcus Pollard and last years first round pick Dallas Clark already on the roster...their second round pick Safety Bob Sanders is fast and a real hitter but undersized and he doesn't play Corner...the Linebackers that the Colts did take in the third and fouith rounds will be hard pressed to become starters on day one...for the reasons that I stated above, the Patriots have widened the gap between themselves and both the Colts and Chiefs after what these teams did in this Draft...on another note...I was amazed how the Lions were able to steal a second round pick from the Cleveland Browns for moving up just one spot in the Draft to take TE Kellen Winslow...Butch Davis may have been a good Coach at Miami-Florida and may still prove to be a decent NFL Coach, but he really could have used Ron Wolf's help in the Draft since he gave up way too much to move up just one spot...the Lions who were able to steal that pick from the Browns had a solid draft and really improved their Offense with the addition of WR Roy Williams and HB Kevin Jones with their first two picks but they could have  made their Offense really dangerous had they taken TE Ben Troupe of Florida instead of LB'er Teddy Lehman with the pick they received from the Browns...last but not least ...I liked what the Chicago Bears were able to accomplish in Lovie Smith's first Draft...Smith was able to land several Defensive Prospects that will fit in perfectly in the type of defense that Lovie wants to build in Chicago...DT's Tommie Harris and Terry Johnson both have great quickness and are penetrators...CB Nathan Vasher is a good fit for his zone scheme and DE Claude Harriott who fell to the fifth round because of a lack of production in his senior year due to a lingering knee injury, can fly off the edge and could turn out to be a real steal in this Draft...LB'er Leon Joe of Maryland is a bit undersized but faster than most of the Cornerbacks that were taken in this Draft...expect the Bears Defense to be much quicker and a force to wreckon with in the near future...I hope everybody enjoyed the Draft and I will be posting an early list of  Prospects for the 2005 NFL Draft within the next week or so...also...don't forget to bookmark our site since we will be following the Draft right from the start of the College season in August, something that we didn't do last season.
