Even though the current rookie pay structure remains in tact for the upcoming Draft and will likely remain the same in 2010, look for a dramatic change in the system for the 2011 Draft...Commissioner Roger Goodell has a lot of work to do in the coming months, but it's near the top of his priority list of ways to improve the league.

Al's Draft Scoop...Tennessee DE Robert Ayers was viewed by scouts as being stout against the run coming into Senior Bowl week...but Ayers flashed the ability to rush the passer with a quick first step and fly off the edge and create havoc in the Norths' backfield during the Senior Bowl practices in Mobile...after last weeks performance, Ayers won't last past the second round of the draft and has a chance to sneak into the bottom part of round one if he continues to impress and put on a show at the combine in Indy.
Longtime NFL coach Dan Reeves has reportedly been in discussions with the Dallas Cowboys about a consultant's role...Reeves recently interviewed with the San Francisco 49ers about the offensive coordinator's job. ESPN

01/23...The Kansas City Chiefs have fired head coach Herm Edwards....Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley is the front runner to become the Chiefs next head coach at this time, but the Chiefs need to wait until after the Super Bowl to interview Haley...reports that Mike Shanahan is in the running for the head coaching position are false.
The Green Bay Packers have added former Panthers DC Mike Trgovac to Dom Capers' defensive staff...Trgovac will coach the Packers defensive line.

Senior Bowl Notes...Cincinnati TE/DE Connor Barwin was moved from TE to DE during yesterdays drills...Barwin has the ability to play both, but his best position in the pros might be as a standup LB'er in a 3-4 scheme...he has the athletic ability since he played basketball for a very good Bearcats team...Oklahoma WR Juaquin Iglesias has improved his stock this week at Mobile...Iglesias has displayed the ability to catch the ball in traffic, seperate from the defender and run crisp routes....Tennessee DE Robert Ayers has flashed the ability to explode off the ball and has improved his stock this week.
Georgia WR Mohamed Massaquoi will miss the rest of the Senior Bowl practices and the game on Saturday with a Grade 1 ankle sprain...Massaquoi had a good week of practice but will need to work on catching the ball with his hands instead of his body which has caused him to struggle with drops at Georgia and this week at Mobile.
01/21...Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis told Tim Ryan of Fox Sports during the Fiesta Bowl production meeting earlier this month that Ohio State head coach Tim Tressel discouraged him and his teammate cornerback Malcolm Jenkins from participating in the Senior Bowl practices and game this week at Mobile...Ryan disclosed this information this afternoon on his radio spot on Sirius...Tressel reportedly told Laurinaitis that the Senior Bowl expericence couldn't help their chances in the upcoming Draft.
At this mornings press conference Jets' head coach Rex Ryan confirmed that the Jets' offensive coordinator job will be offered to Brian Schottenheimer....he also named Ravens LB's coach Mike Pettine as the teams defensive coordinator.
Quick Hits from Wednesday's North Squad morning practice...UConn CB Darius Butler and Oregon St. CB Keenan Lewis were the most impressive defensive backs in this mornings one on one press coverage drills...Ohio St. WR Brian Robiske was impressive in the one on one drills...Cal Poly WR Ramses Barden struggled to seperate from the defender and lacked explosiveness coming off the line of scrimmage and in and out of his breaks...and last but certainly not least...Boston College DT B.J. Raji made the play of the morning scrimmage as he flew off the ball and drove Cal Center Alex Mack backwords into the path of QB Graham Harrell which caused a fumble on the handoff exchange.
The Denver Broncos hired Raiders LB's coach Don Martindale, former Falcons and Packers DC Ed Donatell and Chargers DL coach Wayne Nunnely on Tuesday to complete their defensive staff led my DC Mike Nolan.

There were a few surprises Monday at the Senior Bowl weigh-in...West Virginia QB Pat White was measured at just 6-0 190...Mississippi OT Michael Oher was 6-5 309 (a bit leaner than expected)...Texas WR Quan Cosby was shorter than expected at 5-9 191...Virginia Tech CB Victor Harris was 5-11 186 (lighter than expected) and LSU OG Herman Johnson was measured at 6-7 382 pounds the biggest prospect at Mobile.
01/19...The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly planning on targeting Ravens LB Ray Lewis in the upcoming free agent period ...the Cowboys would like to shore up their inside linebacker position and add a run-stopper in the upcoming free agency period...the Cowboys view Lewis as a possible replacement for Zach Thomas who the team signed just last season.

01/13...The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to terms with Patriots VP of Player Personnel Scott Pioli to become the General Manager in charge of football operations for the Chiefs.
The Cleveland Browns are expected to anounce the hiring of defensive coordinator Rob Ryan and offensive coordinator Brian Daboll as early as today...Ryan was the defensive coordinator for the Oakland Raiders, and Daboll, served as the quarterbacks coach for the New York Jets inder Eric Mangini.
01/12...Tony Dungy will announce that he is stepping down as coach of the Indianapolis Colts at a 5:00 pm press conference scheduled by the Colts for this afternoon.
Former San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan is reportedly expected to be named the defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos....Nolan was the special teams and linebackers coach for the Broncos from 1987 to 1992 and was considered to be the front-runner for the defensive coordinator's job with the Green Bay Packers.
Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has agreed to terms on a multiyear contract with the Denver Broncos...the Broncos are expected to announce the hiring today at a news conference...McDaniels will become the youngest current head coach in the NFL.
01/11...The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly closing in on a deal with Patriots VP of Player Personnel Scott Pioli to run their football operation...Pioli would have complete control of the football side of the Chiefs operation...interim president Denny Thum would be in charge of handling the Chiefs business matters.
01/10...Al's Draft Scoop...Florida quarterback Tim Tebow reminds me of Bobby Douglass a quarterback that played in the league in the 1970's...Douglass was a big left handed quartback that had the mobility to avoid the rush and run like a back with the football...he spent 10 years in the NFL with the Bears, Chargers, Saints, and Packers...his career passing stats were nothing to write home about, but he rushed for 2,650 yards and scored 21 TDs...however...I believe that Tebow's passing skills are much better than Douglass and very underrated at this time...with all the talk of Tebow having to possibly switch positions if he declared for the upcoming draft, I'm willing to say that several NFL teams will look at Tebow as a quarterback first before asking him to switch to another position...his leadership skills are tremendous and his fire and desire to succeed will carry him a long way at the next level.
01/08...Quick Hits...The Houston Texans are are in the process of interviewing Rod Marinelli for their vacancy at the defensive coordinator position...former BC head coach Jeff Jagodzinski is in the running for a job on the Jets staff and could become the teams offensive coordinator if he's passed over for the head coaching position...Philadelphia Eagles GM Tom Heckert has canceled his Friday interview with the Browns.

01/06...A deal between the Cleveland Browns and former Jets coach Eric Mangini is reportedly "imminent" and could be announced before the end of the week...former Browns coach Romeo Crennel is expected to stay in Cleveland as part of Manginii's staff with the title of defenseive coordinator a likely possibility...this news is great for Chiefs fans because the possibility of Scott Pioli coming to Cleveland as their next general manager is very slim since Iowa coach Kirk Ferenz would be Pioli's first choice as coach of the Browns...the Chiefs will reportedly meet with Pioli regarding their GM vacancy this week.
ESPN's John Clayton is reporting that Bills quarterback Trent Edwards may need surgery on his shoulder this offseason.

01/03...A name to keep an eye on over the next few weeks is Chris Polian Vice President of Football Operations for the Indianapolis Colts...Chris is highly regarded around the league and is the son of Colts General Manager Bill Polian...with several teams already looking to fill their GM vacancy and possibly a few more before the playoffs end, look for Polian to receive a call for an interview from several teams to run their football operation.
01/02...Philadelphia Eagles GM Tom Heckert is reportedly Broncos owner Pat Bowlen's first choice to become the teams next General Manager...if Heckert leaves the Eagles for the Broncos job look for Giants DC Steve Spagnuolo to become the Broncos new head coach since Heckert and Spagnuolo worked together for six years in Philadelphia.
The word around the league is that Andy Reid could be in hot water if the Eagles fail to make it out of the Wild Card Playoff round this weekend...the Eagles are favored to beat the Vikings...but stay tuned.
12/31...The Cleveland Browns have reportedly given Patriots VP of Personnel Scott Pioli until next Wednesday to accept the offer that team owner Randy Lerner presented to Pioli during their meeting today...Pioli is also the leading candidate for the Kansas City Chiefs vacant GM job.
Mike Shanahans firing was a surprise to many around the league but Broncos owner Pat Bowlen considered this a make or break year for his franchise and after the team collapsed down the stretch Bowlen decided to part ways with his coach after Shanahan refused to fire DC Bob Slowik.
Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz will reportedly be Scott Pioli's first choice to replace Romeo Crennel in Cleveland if Pioli leaves the Patriots to run the Browns operation.

Baltimore Ravens DC Rex Ryan is the frontrunner to become the St. Louis Rams next head coach replacing interum coach Jim Haslett according to a league source...stay tuned.
12/27...I'll be adding some draft related news to this section during the month of January but for now I'm still focusing on the end of the NFL regular season.
