Al Fronczak's 2010 Mock Draft
(Version 11.0)
03/19
This is my eleventh mock for the 2010 Draft. I'll be updating this mock numerous times between now and the Draft due to teams' needs changing because of free agency and trades. -Al Fronczak
1. St. Louis Rams...QB Sam Bradford (Oklahoma)...In my last mock (before the combine) I said I had a hunch that Sam Bradford would be the pick IF his shoulder passes an extensive set of tests that the Rams' medical staff was going to put him through at the combine...Bradford is the pick.
2. Detroit Lions...DT Ndamukong Suh (Nebraska)...The Lions need a stud in the middle of their defensive line, but could be tempted to move down if the price is right...Suh reminds Jim Schwartz of Albert Haynesworth who Schwartz coached in Tennessee. *Russell Okung could also be considered.
3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers...DT Gerald McCoy (Oklahoma)...McCoy will be a great fit in the Bucs defensive scheme....*Note - I wouldn't be surprised if the Bucs attempt to deal this pick IF they can find a trading partner since the team has multiple needs. Trade down?
4. Washington Redskins...QB Jimmy Clausen (Notre Dame)...The Redskins have the pick of the litter at the OT position..but they also want the QB of their future on their roster from day one, so an attempt to move up for Bradford, can't be ruled out...It might be tough for Shanahan to pass on Clausen here.
5. Kansas City Chiefs...OT Russell Okung (Oklahoma State)..A left tackle to protect Matt Cassel and open holes for their running game is high on the Chiefs priority list and the Chiefs hit the jackpot with Okung slipping to this pick.
6. Seattle Seahawks...S Eric Berry (Tennessee)...The Seahawks have two picks in the top 14 and would love to come away with a QB and a LT...however...Clausen is off the board and the Seahawks could land Charlie Whitehurst in free agency, so Pete Carroll gambles that he can get his starting tackle at pick No. 14 and takes a dynamic playmaker for his secondary in Berry here...the Seahawks just released safety Deon Grant to pave the way for the addition of Berry if he falls to this pick.
7. Cleveland Browns...HB C.J. Spiller (Clemson)..C.J. Spiller would give the Browns a dynamic playmaker for their offense, but the Browns greatest need is at the CB position, but none of the CB prospects are worthy of this high pick...If they move down and out of this pick, look for them to target Rutgers CB Devin McCourty, since Browns' defensive coordinator Rob Ryan and defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson, put McCourty through an on-campus workout on 03/16. *Note - If the Browns don't make an attempt to move up for Bradford, I expect them to use one of their second round picks on Texas QB Colt McCoy, who would be a good fit for the Browns' west coast offense. Trade Down!
8. Oakland Raiders...OT Trent Williams (Oklahoma)...A left tackle to protect the Raiders biggest investment - Jamarcus Russell (or the QB that beats him out for the job) is a very high priority for the Raiders going into the draft.
9. Buffalo Bills...NT Dan Williams (Tennessee)...I'm going back to my original selection of Dan Williams to the Bills, since the team just signed ILB Andra Davis...Williams would help solidify the Bills defensive line and could be used in a rotation with Kyle Williams at the NT position... This move would help the Bills matchup against the Jets and Dolphins, two division rivals that are run first teams...if the Bills pass up Williams here, look for them to target NT Terrence Cody in round two, since general manager Buddy Nix and head coach Chan Gailey were both present at Alabama's pro day workout back on March 10...
*Note - QB Jimmy Clausen trumps Dan Williams here, if he's still on the board at this pick.
10. Jacksonville Jaguars...CB Joe Haden (Florida)...The Jaguars signed DE Aaron Kampman to hopefully fill a need at DE and take CB Joe Haden to strengthen their secondary here. *I expect the Jaguars to move out of this pick since they don't own a second round pick and owner Wayne Weaver is on record saying he intends to take QB Tim Tebow. Trade Down!
11. Denver Broncos (From Chicago)...S/CB Earl Thomas (Texas)...The Broncos will likely choose between ILB Rolando McClain and Earl Thomas here if they keep this pick..the Broncos could also take a look at a WR like Demaryious Thomas or Dez Bryant with this pick.
12. Miami Dolphins...OLB Jason Pierre-Paul (South Florida)...The Dolphins filled one of their needs on the defensive side of the ball with the signing of LB Karlos Dansby and now add Pierre-Paul as a standup edge rusher for the Dolphins 3-4 scheme...Pierre-Paul is being labeled as a one-year wonder, but he may have the highest ceiling of any prospect in this draft. *Note - NT Dan Williams will trump Pierre-Paul, if he's still on the board when the Dolphins pick.
13. San Francisco 49'ers...OT Bryan Bulaga (Iowa)...The Niners need to find a starting tackle in this draft and are pleasantly surprised that Bulaga has slipped to this pick.
14. Seattle Seahawks (From Denver)...OT Anthony Davis (Rutgers)...The Seahawks made S Eric Berry their first pick and fill their need at OT with Davis here...Davis has slipped to this pick because of some off-field concerns...The Seahawks could be tempted to move down in the draft or deal this pick for WR Brandon Marshall.
15. New York Giants...ILB Rolando McClain (Alabama)...The Giants have a hole in the middle of their defense to fill with the release of Antonio Pierce, so they are pleasantly surprised that McClain has made it through to this pick.
16. Tennessee Titans...DE Carlos Dunlap (Florida)...Dunlap has the ability to dominate a game, but will need to be constantly motivated to get the most out of his ability...Dunlap will help fill the void at DE left by Kyle Vanden Bosch's departure...DE Derrick Morgan will also be considered here.
17. San Francisco 49'ers (From Carolina)...S Taylor Mays (USC)...The Niners took OT Bulaga with their first pick in the round and add a player than can help their secondary in Mays...this pick will likely come down to Mays or an edge rusher since the team needs to improve it's pass rush...Niners' head coach Mike Singletary came away from the combine very impressed with Mays.
18. Pittsburgh Steelers...OG/OT Mike Iupati (Idaho)...The Steelers biggest need is to improve their offensive line, and Iupati can start at guard from day one, and kick out to tackle if needed...The Steelers could also fill their need at cornerback with this pick.
19. Atlanta Falcons...DE Derrick Morgan (Georgia Tech)...The Falcons filled their biggest need in their secondary by signing CB Dunta Robinson, and add Morgan here to give the Falcons a pass-rushing presence opposite of John Abraham.
20. Houston Texans...CB Kyle Wilson (Boise State)...The Texans need serious help for at CB in their secondary after losing Dunta Robinson...Wilson will likely be the top rated CB on their board.
21. Cincinnati Bengals...DT Brian Price (UCLA)...The Bengals feel they need to find a DT that can push the pocket for their defense, so Price would be a great fit, but this could be a bit too high for him to come off the board, so they could entertain the thought of trading down.
22. New England Patriots...OLB Brandon Graham (Michigan)...Defense, Defense, and more Defense is the outlook for the Patriots draft...Graham has the athletic ability to drop in coverage and bring some heat off the edge as a rush end in the Patriots 3-4 scheme.
23. Green Bay Packers...OT Charles Brown (USC).....The Packers would like to find a future starting left tackle in this draft and were hoping that Charles Brown of USC was still on the board...Brown is a great fit at LT in the Packers zone-blocking scheme.
24. Philadelphia Eagles...OLB Sean Weatherspoon (Missouri)...The Eagles filled one of their needs by acquiring DE Darryl Tapp from the Seahawks for Chris Clemons and a 4th round pick...Weatherspoon
will fill another need for an Eagles...*Note - I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Eagles attempt to make a move up in the draft if they target a prospect that they feel they must have, since they still have plenty of ammunition to do so. Trade up?
25. Baltimore Ravens...DE Jared Odrick (Penn State)...The Ravens acquired WR Anquan Boldin from the Cardinals to fill one of their needs at the WR position, but lost D-linemen Justin Bannan and Dwan Edwards in free agency...Odrick is now my pick for the Ravens here.
26. Arizona Cardinals...OLB Sergio Kindle (Texas)...The Cards would like to add another OT (not necessarily a LT since Matt Leinart is a southpaw), find a pass rushing OLB, and a replacement inside for Carlos Dansby...Kindle will bring some heat off the edge as a standup LB in the Cards 3-4 scheme.
27. Dallas Cowboys...OG/OC Maurkice Pouncey (Florida)...The Cowboys need an upgrade on their offensive line and need to find an ILB and a FS...Pouncey played center at Florida but can move to guard and give the Cowboys some push in short yardage situations where they struggled last season.
28. San Diego Chargers...HB Ryan Mathews (Fresno State)...The Chargers have needs at NT, RT, HB and depth at DE...The Chargers take a back that can be their bell cow and be a perfect compliment to Darren Sproles in their backfield. Trade Down?
29. New York Jets...WR Dez Bryant (Oklahoma State)...The Jets could use another playmaker at the WR position since Braylon Edwards has been inconsistent at best up to this point...Bryant comes with baggage, but the Jets have the coach and the lockeroom to keep him in check...I also wouldn't rule out the possibility of the Jets making a run at WR Brandon Marshall...The Jets also need to find an edge-rusher that can put some heat on the QB since Vernon Gholston has been a bust up to this point and a DE if they lose Marques Douglas in free-agency.
30. Minnesota Vikings...CB Devin McCourty (Rutgers)...McCourty would help fill a need in their secondary at corner, but the team needs to add another DT since the team is waiting for a decision on the Star Caps case that could sideline both of their DT's for four games next season...DT Brian Price would be their pick, if he's still on the board.
31. Indianapolis Colts...WR Demaryious Thomas (Georgia Tech)...The Colts could use some help in their secondary and upgrade their offensive line across the board, but another dynamic play-maker for their offense would have come in handy against the Saints in the Super Bowl.
32. New Orleans Saints...OLB Daryl Washington (TCU)...The Saints have some tweaking to do despite being World Champions...their number one priority is to upgrade both of their OLB positions and Sapp would do just that...Another DE, and depth for their offensive line is also a priority.
Prospects that just missed the first round:
HB Jahvid Best...WR Arrelious Benn..WR Golden Tate...TE Jermaine Gresham
OT Bruce Campbell...CB Kareem Jackson... CB Patrick Robinson
